The OpenWGA REST web services consists of four different APIs which can be individually enabled or disabled per app.
The APIs implement different ways to represent and query the same app data. What way is suitable for your needs depends on the nature of your data and your querying needs. It is perfectly valid to use multiple APIs for one app together, as they complement different needs.
